Preventing Breast Cancer

We're very concerned about this topic because of how it affected us through our families and the women in our lives and on our staff. PearlieMae's death was a result of her fear of breast cancer. The cancer spread from there to her back and into the bone . This being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month we thought we should contribute to its success. PearlieMae might have wanted it that way though we know she would shudder knowing we've revealed her "Big C" condition.
"The Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study, a large, population-based cohort study of 5042 female breast cancer survivors in China. Women aged 20 to 75 years with diagnoses between March 2002 and April 2006 were recruited and followed up through June 2009. Information on cancer diagnosis and treatment, lifestyle exposures after cancer diagnosis, and disease progression was collected at approximately 6 months after cancer diagnosis and was reassessed at 3 follow-up interviews conducted at 18, 36, and 60 months after diagnosis. Annual record linkage with the Shanghai Vital Statistics Registry database was carried out to obtain survival information for participants who were lost to follow-up. Medical charts were reviewed to verify disease and treatment information." - Journal of the American Medical Association (December 9, 2009)
We're believers in soy products yet we're not certain that removing the other nutritional factors from the above equation makes it a wonder drug. Genetically Asian women suffer less from breast cancer than European and women of African descent. The results aren't new in 1998 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition drew a connection between soy and breast cancer. It's worth noting during this "Pink Month" because its use might be prevented.
"The following may reduce breast cancer risk: kelp; forsteronia refracta compound; oleic acid in olive oil restricted calories; apple, Danggui Longhui Wan ( chinese medicine); moderate exercise; turmeric, fish oil, weight loss, omega-3 fatty acids, cabbage and sauerkraut; Artemisinin; vitamin D, soy, garlic, grape juice, whole wheat, pro-vitamin E, low-protein diet, doing home work, high dietary fiber, broccoli, breastfeeding, grapes, green tea and mushroom, vitamin c, and sun exposure. Those factors that may boost risk are: high GI diet, alcohol, adipose fat, Bisphenol A; cleaning chemicals, hormone therapy, french fries, omega 6 fatty acid linoleic acid found in corn and soybean oil; mamograms, dietary fat, red meat and processed meat, barbecued meat, grapefruit, western diet, aluminum salts, radiation, iron, antibiotics, calcium, living in a large, metropolitan area, and acrylamide." - Food Consumer (Pink Tips)
Missing from that list is the desire to seek care until its too late. Both men and women suffer from that same condition of fear if our personal experience is any indication of having cancer and seeking immediate medical treatment. We don't want to know, believing ignorance is bliss and that we can't die if we don't know for sure. How's that for research. We believe that nothing "boost risk" more than fear and trepidation whether you're male or female.
"Although not all experts are convinced that it's safe to begin advising women to add soy to their diet, they agree that there is no need to avoid soy altogether. "What I've been telling my patients right now is that soy as part of a healthy balanced diet is safe. But I would avoid trying to eat a totally soy-based diet or taking a soy supplement. You have to be careful in not extrapolating beyond the study," says Dr. Richard Lee, medical director of the Integrative Medicine Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston." - Time (December 2009)
We'd have to agree. The nutritional solution isn't a one (1) item choice. Variety seems to be what all the experts agree upon. The Pink Tips given offer a variety of items that together might be the super fuel that would be a preventative against breast cancer. Though finding a lump and leaving it rather than calling attention to it to your physician is a mistake that can cost you your life and your family much pain and suffering. Unfortunately we have too much experience with the latter than we care to admit or ever care to see repeated.

It's NOT Back!!!!!

News of how to fight the flu and that the flu has already returned (it is that time you know!). What we can take heart in knowing is that those who know how to fight it and what the effects of the tools we have to fight it are and can be. We love vitamin therapy. We believe in vitamin therapy treatments in spite of the research for and against it. It's cheap and easy - that's why we love it.
"Cases have already been reported by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That means flu is striking early this year—the season doesn't officially start until October. Flu activity usually peaks in January, February, and March, and winds down in May, says Henry Bernstein, a professor of pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' infectious diseases committee." - US News & World Report (August 26, 2010)
The deaths have already begun for this season (2010) though not in our jurisdiction or even in this country, as far as we know. We do know this - Dr. Edward Belongia is again apart of the research team bringing us the good news. You may remember Dr. Belongia from his earlier research in the area of vaccine:
"In the largest population-based study to date of the safety of trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine in young children, there were very few medically attended events, none of which were serious, significantly associated with the vaccine. This study provides additional evidence supporting the safety of universally immunizing all children 6 to 23 months old with influenza vaccine." - Journal of the American Medical Association (Oct 25, 2006)
The news reports are getting as detailed as we normally make them. No where in the "analysis" is vitamin D mentioned but researchers are so familiar with the apparent success of the others reviews that they mention the therapy even though a connection is not as scientifically asserted. Indeed the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) discusses the matter more in their Letters to the Editor section than they do in actual research data. Its the analysis that is much at odds. We don't present it here because it's not free to see but your doctor's office or clinic may have a copy you can peruse.
"In an analysis of data from a population-based active surveillance study of influenza cases in Wisconsin, Belongia and colleagues compared clinical characteristics of pandemic 2009 influenza A(H1N1) with illnesses caused by other influenza A strains. Among the authors’ findings were that individuals with 2009 H1N1 infection were younger than those with 2007-2008 (H3N2) infection (median age, 10 years and 25 years, respectively) and that the risk of most serious complications was not elevated among adults or children infected with 2009 H1N1 compared with other recent seasonal influenza A strains." - Journal of the American Medical Association (Sept. 8, 2010)
The numbers are small but not insignificant to reach the conclusions they have (and before you go and say: "that I took the vaccine and still got the flu!") the idea is to stay alive. If you didn't die the fact that it was hard to get, or that you had to stand in a long line, all might be inconvenient but the best thing, at least for us is that we're still here with you and for you.
"545 2009 H1N1, 221 seasonal H1N1, and 632 H3N2 infections ..individuals with 2009 H1N1 infection were younger than those with H3N2. The risk of most serious complications was not elevated in adults or children with 2009 H1N1 compared with recent seasonal strains." - JAMA
What the most recent study suggest is that vitamin D did work or rather boost the effect of the vaccine that:
"The reduction in influenza A was more prominent in children who had not been taking other vitamin D supplements" - The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (March 10, 2010)
If that says anything then it says don't go hog wild on taking vitamins (which is what we've known all along). If your body can't use what you're taking it in it discards it or in this case can make you less able to receive the effectiveness that can come using what you need and only what you need. We also feel that about exercising. Why do it unless you're going to get the maximum effect from it? We're going to work on that.

Suddenly Dying Babies

It could happen in their sleep. Don't fall asleep cause Freddy will get you. After Friday the 13th there was A Nightmare on Elm Street. Any first time parent doesn't have to be familiar with the films to worry when their child is sleeping if they are really sleeping or are in jeopardy. A quiet sleeping infant can cause anxiety in any and probably every new parent. There is much to fear if you wish to live in fear. Fear for the young is understandable and concern commendable. Unreasonable fear is just unreasonable and parents luck or blessed enough to suffer pregnancy twice learn, eventually that lesson.

NBC News, WUSA the local CBS affiliate and other local stations featured the current research on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) a problem that doesn't really affect the newborns in the nation.  The numbers one, two, three and four causes of death for newborns in the US are (according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention):
  1. Unintentional accidents, 27.8%,
  2. Heart disease, 8.4%,
  3. Homicide 8.1%,
  4. Septicemia 6.5%;
From 2006, these are "pre-flu" death numbers. These are the more substantial numbers of dead babies, unless your child is the child not reflected in the group and has succumb to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

In the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) autopsy study on forty-one (41) dying infants offers a possible answer to what makes sleeping infants die: "Brainstem Serotonergic Deficiency." Is it the final answer - we don't think so. But it is an answer when there was no clear answer prior and possible the solution to a prevailing new parent fear.

The 10 leading causes of infant mortality for 2007,  for the US according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), were:
  1. Congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities
  2. Disorders related to short gestation and low birth weight, not elsewhere classified
  3. Sudden infant death syndrome
  4. Newborn affected by maternal complications of pregnancy
  5. Accidents (unintentional injuries)
  6. Newborn affected by complications of placenta, cord and membranes
  7. Bacterial sepsis of newborn
  8. Respiratory distress of newborn
  9. Neonatal hemorrhage
  10. Diseases of the circulatory system
  11. The only difference between the leading causes for 2006 and those for 2007 is that Bacterial sepsis of newborn and Respiratory distress of newborn exchanged rank. (CDC p6)
So goes the nation but the national numbers are not substantially reflected in our region. The numbers don't reflect SIDS deaths in numbers equaling alarm status. (CDC Table 9)

And you thought we only wrote about the aged and aging! The only reason this story was worth our attention is because such stories divert attention from the more serious and deadly causes of death of all ages. If the news was a magic show this would be a simple case of misdirection. We think it's not news worthy unless of course you're the parent suffering the loss. Our question is why in this environment is their suffering superior to all others?
